What Is NSFW Discord and How to Block/Unblock NSFW Channels?

You must be familiar with the instant messaging platform Discord, which runs on both PC and mobile devices.

Discord is an outstanding choice for free voice & video chatting along with file sharing. And what makes the platform more interesting is its unique features for gamers, creators, twitchers or live streamers.

What is NSFW Discord?

NSFW means “Not Safe For Work”. It signifies the content which includes pornography, violence, gambling, or other adult content; not meant for underaged viewers. And while these contents come to the front, you’ll see the notification of 18+ content or age-restricted content. 

While normally NSFW refers to “Not Safe For Work”, Discord has given it another shape with a bit tricky name – “Not Suitable for Wumpus”. Amazing, isn’t it? On this platform, there are adult contents available but with some strict rules which the channels have to follow. 

On Discord, the Wumpus is like a little innocent creature that discovers around the platform. It is very sensitive to the 18+ content like images, videos or other media forms. And thereby, to protect Wumpus, the developer team has tagged the NSFW label on those channels that provide adult content. As a result, when he finds the “Not Suitable for Wumpus” label on a channel, he promptly avoids it. 

NSFW content on Discord

On Discord, there’s an interesting fact related to the NSFW content. It allows adult or 18+ content on the platform only for those adult users who want to see them. This means you have to be at least 18 years old or more to see NSFW content on Discord.

And for channels, Discord has made up some specific rules. If you want to post 18+ content on your channel, then it has to be designed for NSFW; otherwise, you will have to face many troubles regarding the post. Even your channel may become penalized by the team.

In addition, if you want to make a conversation about any NSFW post (images or videos) on your channel, there has to be an NSFW label on your account. And when you try to get that label, Discord will verify whether you are 18 or 18+ years old or not. If you are below the required age, the access will be denied immediately.

However, you should know that if your channel is in the NSFW category, its name will look like this – “nsfw-channelname.”

How to Block NSFW Channels on Discord?

If you are under 18 or you just don’t want to be engaged with NSFW posts on Discord channels, there’s an option in Discord settings to avoid all NSFW channels. All you need is to enable the Explicite Media filter in the privacy setting of your account.

Follow these simple quick steps:

• Open the User settings in your Discord account.
• From the left panel got to Privacy & Safety.
• Now select the Keep me safe option on the right side.
• And also enable the direct messages from server members

From now on Discord will scan every image and video in all the direct messages sent by anyone. And if there’s any explicit or NSFW content found in the messages, Discord will block it. Moreover, if your age is below 18 years, Discord will not allow you to assess any NSFW content on the platform. 

How to Unblock NSFW Channels?

Only if you are 18 or 18+ years old and want to see NSFW content on Discord, the platform will allow you to access adult content. However, there is a procedure you have to be through to enable this.

Follow this method to unlock NSFW channels on Discord.

• Take a picture of yourself which should include – a photo ID containing your DOB and a piece of paper with your full Discord Username including the last 4 digits (e.g. name#1234).
• Now send a request to the Trust and Safety team of Discord via – https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/requests/new.
• Fill out the form accordingly and attach your photo then submit the application

Please Note:

• The picture should be clear enough to be read easily. And it must have all the required information about you. 
• You must use the email associated with your discord account to send the photo.

Finally, Discord will reply to you that your information will be used only to verify your age and nothing else.

How to Create an NSFW Channel on Discord?

If you’re willing to make an NSFW channel on Discord, there’s an option available for you. Discord provides a setting to the channels, which allows users to nominate channels as NSFW.

Follow the given steps to create an NSFW channel.

• Open Edit Channel located right beside your channel name.
• Now scroll down and select the NSFW Channel option and turn on the toggle.
• After that, click Save Changes at the bottom.

Before opening an NSFW channel on Discord, you should know elaborately about the Discord laws related to it.

While opening these channels, Discord will warn you with a message that you have to be an 18+ person because the channels may contain adult contents.

Content which cannot be posted on age-gated channels should not includ any adult content. If someone places an adult content on a non-NSFW channel, moderators will remove that content and the user who posted it may become terminated from the server.

Although Discord allows adult contents in dedicated channels, there are some contents which it doesn’t accept (e.g. sexualizing minors).
